The European Context
New directives have just modified European road transport.
The European context of road transport is undergoing great transformation due to the application of European Directives towards « Interoperability » and « Eurovignette ».

The Interoperability Directive
It has been approved by the European Union Council in April 2004 and established the principles of interoperability of the ETC road systems in the European Union.
The Eurovignette Directive
It has been approved by the European Union Council in March 2006 and imposes new rules on the motorway companies as from 1st May 2008 :
- range of toll charges according to the Euro vehicles standard starting from 2010
- toll surcharge in urban areas and on certain mountain roads
- toll levy on all routes used by international traffic (not just motorways)
- new framework for the discount policy of the motorway companies :
- discounts are calculated on one vehicle and not on the fleet
- discounts have an upper limit of 13% of the full tariff
